Rosebud announced the retirement of its free plan on 30 September 2026. Its notice says existing writing remains available to export. A plan change is a reason to reassess the subscription, not evidence that everyone should leave or that their entries are being deleted.
This comparison uses each product's published plan information. A free writing plan and free ongoing AI responses are different offers. Check the feature you actually use, the billing period, and the data policy before choosing.
A free Rosebud alternative that writes back
Dayora is a sensible option when the main requirement is to write or speak an entry and receive a reflection without starting a subscription. Its free core includes written reflections on new entries, voice transcription, mood tracking and ordinary journal search.
It is a different product from Rosebud. Dayora's conversational Reflect features and its Ask feature should not be treated as interchangeable. Ask your journal is currently limited to selected Plus accounts, so a new subscription alone does not guarantee access.
For a fair first test, write a short account of an ordinary day. Read the response, check whether it understands your words, and correct it if it misses something. Then try writing on another day. A useful routine matters more than a feature count.
Your old writing can stay with you.

When another alternative may fit better
Choose Reflection to explore guided writing and regular reviews. Its public material also describes Ask and voice calls, so it would be misleading to present it as a journal with no conversational features. Use its plan screen to check what is included before paying.
Choose Mindsera if structured frameworks are central to your practice. Its free Curious plan covers writing tools; its Genius plan adds AI features. That distinction matters if you need ongoing AI responses at no cost.
Choose Day One if an encrypted personal archive is your first requirement. Its Basic plan and Gold AI tier serve different needs. A notebook or an ordinary text file can also be a useful free alternative when you mainly want a reliable place to write.
Keep your Rosebud history before you switch
Download an export and open a few older entries before making an irreversible account change. Preserve the original files even if another app offers an importer. Check dates, your own words, and any material you expect to keep.
Dayora does not currently import Rosebud Markdown archives. You can keep that archive separately and begin new writing in Dayora. If keeping every old entry inside the next app is essential, verify that app's Rosebud-specific import with a small sample first. A general import button is not proof of compatibility.
Compare the cost of the features you will use
Rosebud's public Bloom price is $12.99 per month or $107.99 per year. Mindsera publishes $14.99 per month or $129 per year for Genius. Dayora's core is free; optional Plus pricing is shown on its plan page. These are published USD prices, not account-specific quotes.
Do not multiply a discounted annual equivalent by a different billing period, or assume an introductory offer will renew at the same price. Before paying, check the amount charged today, the renewal amount and the feature allowance. Rosebud's in-app transition offer may differ from its public price.
Read the data policy as carefully as the feature list
A free price does not make two services' data policies equivalent. Dayora participates in an OpenAI data-sharing programme that provides free usage, and journal content sent through that arrangement can be used for model training. Read the linked privacy policy before saving personal writing.
Compare provider processing, encryption, export, deletion and memory controls. End-to-end encryption for an archive and server-side AI analysis are different properties. Choose the balance that fits what you intend to write.

What is a free alternative to Rosebud journaling?

Is Rosebud still free after September 30, 2026?
Rosebud's official notice announces retirement of the free plan on that date. Follow the notice and your own account's offer for the current terms; a free trial is different from an ongoing free plan.
Which Rosebud alternative can import my entries?
Dayora cannot currently import a Rosebud archive. Ask any prospective replacement whether it explicitly supports Rosebud's export format, and test a small sample. You can also keep the Markdown archive independently of your next journal.
Is Dayora the same as Rosebud but free?
No. The products differ in their workflows, features, limits and data policies. Dayora's free core is useful for ongoing writing and reflections, but it does not reproduce every Rosebud feature.
Do I have to cancel Rosebud to try an alternative?
You can test a different journal before deciding what to do with Rosebud. Creating a Dayora account does not cancel any existing Rosebud subscription. Manage billing with the provider that charged you.
