Five journaling apps that use AI, or keep it on a paid plan, compared on the things that decide whether you keep writing: what is actually free, what the AI does, voice, taking your writing with you, and what happens to your entries. A free trial and a continuing free plan are different offers, and this page keeps them apart.

What we compared
We read each company's own plan, help and privacy pages and compared what they publish. That is a comparison of published policies and features, not a lab test of every paid plan, so every claim below links to the page it came from, and every price says when it was read.
Free access, and what the AI does on it
Plenty of apps are free to download and then put everything that makes them AI journals behind a subscription. We separate the plan you can keep using for free from a trial that ends, and say which AI features each free plan actually includes.
Voice and recordings
Speaking is often easier than typing at the end of a long day. We note whether voice is free or paid, whether it becomes text you can edit, and what the company says happens to the audio.
Taking your writing with you
A journal holds years of your life. An app you can leave with your writing intact is a safer place to start than one you cannot, so export is part of the comparison, not an afterthought.

Who processes your words, whether they can be used to train AI, and what is encrypted are real differences between these apps. We quote what each company states and link the policy; none of these statements is an independent audit.

Dayora is a journal that writes back. Write or speak an entry and the reply takes a shape that fits what you wrote: a vent is heard without advice, good news is taken in, a decision is laid out with your own reasons and left to you. You can keep talking an entry through with Dayora, and it notices the people and patterns that come back across your entries. It is made by the team writing this page.
Free access and AI: Unlimited typed entries and core reflections are free. Plus adds deeper memory, reports and calls. Ask Your Journal requires both Plus and rollout access.
Voice: Free voice notes up to five minutes, turned into text. Live two-way calls are a separate Plus feature, currently in English.

You want a reply to every entry without paying
Dayora. The reply, voice notes up to five minutes, mood tracking and conversations about your entries are in the free core, and nothing in it is counted. Choose something else if keeping your entries out of AI training is a requirement.
You want structured thinking frameworks, and will pay for the AI
Mindsera. Consider it for structured writing frameworks and paid analysis. Its basic free journal does not include the paid AI and voice tools.
You want guided prompts and periodic reviews on a free writing plan
Reflection. Consider it for guided prompts and periodic reviews with a continuing free writing plan. Check the AI features you need against Premium.
You want an encrypted, photo-rich record across devices
Day One. Consider it for an encrypted, photo-rich record across devices. Its AI features need the Gold plan.
You liked Rosebud's conversational style
Rosebud. Consider it for conversational guidance on a paid plan, now that its free plan has been retired. Check the current offer in Rosebud. If you would rather keep writing for free, export your Rosebud journal first and bring it with you: importing a Rosebud journal into Dayora.
Our honest take
We make Dayora, so we do not award ourselves a winner. What we can say plainly: if the deciding question is whether the AI works on the free plan, Dayora is the only app here whose free plan replies to every entry. If the deciding question is whether your entries can be used to train AI, Mindsera and Reflection state that they exclude journal data and Dayora does not. And if you want end-to-end encryption, Day One lists it on every plan, which none of the AI-first apps here claim.
For claims about memory or transcription quality, a feature list is not enough. Use the same diary and questions in each app, then inspect the answers. Our open benchmark uses one fictional diary and the same questions for every app, so you can check memory and transcription claims yourself.
Keep your history before switching
Export a backup first. Check original dates, author separation and attachments before deleting anything in the old app. These tools help with selected writing, not every type of media.

What is the best free AI journaling app?
It depends on what free needs to include. Dayora's free core replies to every entry and takes voice notes up to five minutes. Reflection keeps a free writing plan and puts its AI features on Premium. Mindsera's free plan covers basic journaling without the paid AI. Day One's free Basic plan has no AI. Rosebud retired its free plan on 30 September 2026.
Which AI journaling apps say they do not train on my entries?
Mindsera and Reflection each state that journal data is excluded from AI training. Dayora is different: entries go to the AI providers that power it, which may use them to train their models, as Dayora's privacy policy explains. These are each company's published statements, so read the policies linked above.
Does Day One have AI features?
Yes, on its paid Gold plan: Daily Chat, reflective summaries and Go Deeper prompts. The free Basic plan and the Silver plan have no AI features.
Is Rosebud still free?
No. Rosebud retired its free plan on 30 September 2026. Its notice says existing writing stays exportable, so keep a backup before you switch.
Can I move my journal to a different app?
Usually, with an export first. Check that dates and attachments survive before deleting anything. Dayora imports a ChatGPT export automatically and offers a guided import for selected Rosebud text.
How much does Dayora cost?
The core is free: writing entries, a reply to every entry, voice notes up to five minutes, mood tracking, conversations with Dayora, Your Circle, letters and export, with no credit card. Dayora Plus is optional at $9 a month or $72 a year (USD) and adds Call Dayora, a daily synthesis email and Deep Self Reports. Every account can also claim one Deep Self Report free after writing seven entries.
Does Dayora use my entries to train AI?
It can be. Dayora may use your entries to train and improve the AI models and features that power it, and the AI providers that write Dayora's replies may use what Dayora sends them to train and improve their own models, under agreements that help keep Dayora free. Dayora never sells your entries. The full detail is in the privacy policy at dayora.ai/privacy. If exclusion from model training is a requirement for you, Dayora is not the right fit; Mindsera and Reflection each state that journal data is excluded from training.
